History of Asbestos in Georgia
Asbestos has an ancient history in Georgia. The naturally occurring mineral is found in numerous locations along the Appalachian Mountains and throughout the state. Before asbestos mines became severely restricted by asbestos legislation and regulation in the 1970's, there were 17 asbestos mines operating in the state.

Atlanta has been the state's major commercial hub for more than a century. Industry plays a large part in both Atlanta's and Georgia's economies. During the 20th century, in Georgia as in most other states around the nation, where industry flourished you could be certain to find asbestos. Georgia-Pacific is a large corporation in the state responsible for numerous cases of asbestos exposure leading to asbestosis, mesothelioma and other asbestos related disease.

The state also has other industries typically linked to asbestos exposure including construction, paper and textiles, power plants and military bases, among others.
